Why British Professors are Better

The main reason: alcohol.
From what I've seen in the UK, nobody bats an eye when you go out for a pint with your prof, it's an acceptable and advantageous way to have interesting conversations.Example: meet Jonathan Hope, graduate of Christ Church at Oxford, professor of my "Mementos" class at ASE. We recently read "Slaughterhouse Five," which I really liked. However, the one class period we spent discussing it was supremely unsatisfying for me. I just didn't fully agree with what my peers were getting from the text, but I also wasn't completely sure what I really thought.
So we talked. A great deal. The subject led to various other things, but it was a conversation I would probably never find myself having with any American teacher I've had. And as you can imagine, the alcohol only helped to liven the conversation.
This is probably Jonathan thinking "give the Heart of Darkness comparisons a rest, dear boy."
Conclusion: grab a pint with someone you can learn a lot from. And who knows, maybe you'll even get a kick-ass-dance-off out of it too (thanks, Andy Venn).
