So I’m in Bath, England, and I’m gonna blog about it. I don’t want to be one of those people who send mass e-mails about my crazy fun abroad times. Instead, if people care, they can check here.
This is my first time in the UK, and so far everything is pretty damn adorable. I only spent a half hour in London, sitting in the Heathrow airport waiting for a bus, so I don’t really know what London is like. But I do know that everything I saw on the bus ride was provincial and quaint. Sprawling green countryside with sheep and small towns with rows of slender, stone, three-story buildings.
Bath itself has lots of ancient architecture, including an incredible Abbey (I spent a long time staring at the intricate carvings in the massive wooden doors), but they also have streets filled with trendy shops and eateries. Streets and sidewalks are tiny, everything is Victorian in appearance, but then there are fluorescent lights above doorways. There’s a Pizza Hut and KFC here. I’ve heard that corn is a popular topping for pizza, but I haven’t seen it first hand. Mullets are in. Pubs have awesome names, always starting with “the,” and usually some sort of animal. Examples: The Dark Horse, The White Hat, The Ram, The Rat and Parot.
Ironically, the first place I ate here was called “Manhattan,” and they boasted having American-style burgers. Not so, but not bad burgers. I’ll need to try their garlic mayo burger. They’re also located very close to my house. I live up a hill on the south side of Bath, just behind the train station. The accommodations are nice, but I’m kinda bummed we don’t live in one of the historic buildings. Some people here are living in the Georgian houses of once famed lords and ladies, but ours has no history. Still, it’s a nice place, and I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this is my home for four months. I need to learn to cook.
